CANIS DIRUS’ “A Somber Wind from a Distant Shore” debut is a black metal bouquet of Midwestern melancholy forged in the desolate hinterlands of Minnesota. Named after the “dire wolf” indigenous to North America over 100,000 years ago, CANIS DIRUS base their epic songs around their disdain for humanity who have been perpetually encroaching on natures beauty. The last burning embers of a dying autumnal twilight, the beckoning shrieks of oncoming night, the blanket of everlasting darkness: All encapsulated in the foreboding atmosphere of “A Somber Wind from a Distant Shore”.

"Canis Dirus are a band who rely on listeners to stick by the music and they require a person to really pick apart the layers as there are a number of subtle elements beneath the hypnotic surface, like the double bass. Persistence is the key and in persevering, the listener will reap the rewards of this atmospheric obscurity." -- Taken from Metal Archives

"The album is very well paced and it never gets dull or boring like many releases of this genre, the songs are long but are very well structured to keep the listener hooked into them, and before you even know it the whole album has flown by." -- Infernal Masquerade Webzine

about

Canis Dirus Minnesota

Canis Dirus is an expression of the life, death and rebirth cycle of our own existence. It is the dichotomy of loss and gain, birth and death, sorrow and triumph as well as prey and predator. Taking the name from the dire wolf, a prehistoric apex predator which existed in our own area of the world over 100,000 years ago, our music is an exploration of the brutal nature that surrounds us. ... more
